Superstition Poppies
by
Nancy Green

A photograph in the travel section of the local newspaper inspired this piece. In the spring when the poppies bloom, the foothills trail to the Superstition Mountains is ablaze with blooming poppies.

The background is collaged with fabric bits & tulle on hand-dyed cotton sateen. The poppies are made of acrylic painted on Vilene, then warped with a heat gun & appliquéd. Free-motion embroidery is used to detail the foreground. The background is enhanced using a whipstitch with different colored bobbin thread & thread tension adjustments to emphasize the endless trial of poppies. Original design. Hand & commercial dyed cottons.

Dimensions: 17.5” x 31”
